Diana’s family items up for sale
Tue 6 July 2010
Valuable possessions belonging to the family of Diana, the Princess of Wales, are due to go under the hammer at three auctions in London*.
Some of the antique items and pieces of art due to be sold are thought to have been in the aristocratic family for centuries, either at the Spencer family estate in Northamptonshire or in their London home.
Althorp House, the country estate where Diana grew up, is now occupied by her brother Earl Charles Spencer. One of the sales, called the “Althorp Attic Sale”, will include 19th century carriages owned by the family, along with saddles, furniture, and other small items.
One lot expected to sell at a high price is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, which has been in the Spencer family since 1802. The portrait, painted in 1613 and 1614, is likely to fetch upwards of £8m at auction.
Auctions, both traditional and online, are popular choices for those looking for high value art and antiques for their homes.
However, insurers are now reminding homeowners to ensure that their purchases are properly covered with
home contents insurance policies of a high enough value in the case of damage or theft.
