Men avoid household chores

Fri 9 July 2010

Men have been ousted as complacent about the state of their homes after a recent survey showed that two thirds of men spend just 30 minutes a week doing household chores.

In a survey of 1,200 people, it was revealed that 68.6% of men in the UK do 30 minutes of chores each week, whilst 85% of women spend 5 hours doing chores around the home.

Men are said to avoid jobs such as emptying the dishwasher, doing the laundry, and making the bed. However, women do not get away scot free as only 23.4% claim to do the gardening each week, and are also said to steer clear of emptying the bins.

So while women may be more house proud than their male counterparts, the 87.6% of men who claim to do the gardening each week are at least motivated to keep their outdoor space looking presentable.

With the news that men choose to do the gardening over the housework, insurers are recommending that they check whether their garden tools and lawnmowers are covered under their home insurance policies. Garden insurance can be taken out from some insurance providers as additional cover.
