Batman outdoes Superman

Thu 4 March 2010

Only days after a Superman comic sold at a record price, a rare Detective Comic No 27 sold at auction for around £655,000 (US $1.075 million), beating the recent record by £9,000*. Number 27 of the Detective Comics is one of the most famous in comic book history, as the copy shows the debut of superhero Batman.

The 1939 copy was bought by an anonymous bidder, as well as sold by an anonymous seller. Both parties wished to keep their identities secret at the Dallas auction.

Shirrel Rhoades, former publisher and executive vice president of Marvel Comics, said that comic books are seen as a sound investment and that these two successful auction prices are likely to keep prices up. He added: “We’re probably seeing a little bit of a feeding frenzy”.

Other experts were correct in their assumption that Batman and Superman comics would be the first to break the US $1 million bracket. However both of the recent copies have been in excellent condition, making them highly desirable and eligible to make top dollar.

Taking out high value insurance is advised by insurers to protect your home contents, especially when items such as rare comic books are held in the home.
