Comic sells for super price

Mon 22 February 2010

A copy of the first comic to feature Superman has been sold for £646,000 on an online auction, becoming the most expensive comic book ever sold. Originally sold for around six pence, the 1938 edition of Action Comics No 1 was sold by a private seller to a ‘well-known’ New York buyer.

This edition has been described as the “Holy Grail of comic books” by Stephen Fishler, co-owner of US auction site Comic Connect, whilst sale organiser Vincent Zurolo called it “a fantastic investment”. This copy in particular was of a high grade (8.0), making it more desirable – and more expensive – to the buyer.

The previous record was also held by an Action Comics No 1, but of a poorer condition. This sold for £205,000 in 2009.

“The opportunity to buy an un-restored, high-grade Action One comes along once every two decades. It’s certainly a milestone,” said Mr Fishler.

Collecting comic books, especially rare editions, has a major following around the world today, with top collectors seeking to preserve what they often view as artwork. Insurers recommend getting appropriate home contents insurance to keep your collection protected financially.
