Rise in damage to buildings
Sat 10 July 2010
As classrooms across Britain empty for the next few weeks, more children are expected to be around the home playing with their siblings and friends.
Home contents insurance experts claim that this rise in activity at the home could lead to an increased amount of claims resulting from damage to the building, furnishings and other objects*.
This claim is backed up by a recent survey conducted to 1,200 customers of a UK financial services provider. 23 per cent of respondents said they had made a claim on their home insurance within the past five years due to damage caused by children during the summer holidays.
The most common repairs needed were for broken windows, whilst broken furniture and electrical items were also frequent types of damage.
When asked what the damage was caused by, respondents said the main cause was ball games around the home. Following this was accidents from computer game playing, and riding bikes or skateboards indoors.
Most of these minor damages are covered under home insurance policies; however policy holders may be well advised to ensure their items are sufficiently covered in case these kinds of incidents occur.
